LOADED GUT BASS STRINGS
"C" TYPE
NOT IN PRODUCTION AT THIS TIME INTRODUCTION
The appearance of wound strings caused, starting from
the end of the 17th century, the definitive abandoning of
the ancient manufacturing techniques of the traditional
all-gut strings. This explains why modern plain gut
strings fail to produce an acceptable acoustical
performance in the low registers, thus making it
necessary to use wound strings for music that actually
pre-dates their historical appearance. This, in turn,
presents an obvious philological paradox as well as
serious tone and balance problems between high and low
registers. Measurements from a large number of original
bridges and tail pieces of plucked and bowed instruments
dating from the late 16th and 17th Centuries show that
the diameters of the bass string holes are too small to
fit plain gut strings of sufficient working tension.
Musical iconography from the 17th Century also shows
strings of quite different colors from that typical of
plain gut, varying from dark red to brown. Treatises of
the time confirm, too, that strings possessed a
remarkable duration of sound and acoustical exuberance.
All this suggests a revolutionary hypothesis: the
loading of gut, a technological strategy employed by the
ancient string makers in order to render the strings to
be used in the low registers more sonorous.
TECHNICAL
SPECIFICATIONS
These are varnished natural gut strings,
characterized by a high, standardized specific weight
achieved by a loading process with a special mineral
compound. Diameters smaller than 185 "C" are
manufactured with a gradual loading decrease, in order to
keep the otherwise excessive brightness of sound of the
thinner strings under control and at the same time to
obtain a higher tensile resistance and a longer playing
life. Caution: do not exceed a frequency working index (vibrating string length in meters x frequency in Hz) of 80, as the string will break. Note: The C type string formula is protected by U.S. and international patents
COLOR: REDDISH BROWN, SURFACE
PERFECTLY SMOOTH AND VARNISHED.
ACOUSTICAL
PROPERTIES AND FIELD OF APPLICATION
Strong and warm tone, without the excessive
brightness typical of wound strings, perfectly coherent
with the tone and dynamics character of plain, or even
nylon, high strings. Excellent in tuning stability, better
than any plain gut or wound strings available today.
Indispensable for Renaissance and Baroque stringing with
the strictest respect to authenticity. Care should be
taken not to twist them in the direction opposite to the
one they already have.
THIS PRODUCT IS COMPLETELY NON-TOXIC. NOTE: C TYPE STRINGS ARE NOT IN PRODUCTION AT THIS TIME.
